I drink a smoothie every morning. It gets my day started off right, in more ways than one. It makes me feel good after I drink it and I don’t get the shakes like coffee would give me. I used to drink coffee for breakfast, but realized I don’t want to be addicted to coffee anymore. Yes, addicted. If you have to have it to be able to function, and get a headache if you don’t have it, well that sounds like an addiction.

It also starts my morning off healthy, which makes it easier to make healthier choices during the day. If you use frozen fruit, smoothies are pretty cheap to make. I have a Vitamix (which is the best blender EVER) so frozen fruit is no problem.

I normally add spinach and goji berries to my smoothies, and at least 3 fruits. But if im making a smoothie for Kyle it has to be pretty basic like this Blueberry smoothie. He has a long day (work from 11 am – midnight, then back at 7am for brunch) so I knew he would need something healthy and refreshing before getting into a hot kitchen.

Healthy Blueberry Smoothie
yield: 1 smoothie

1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/4 cup frozen strawberries
2 TBS flaxseed
1 container nonfat blueberry yogurt
1/2 almond milk
handful ice (to thicken)

1. Blend all ingredients until smooth. Add ice if too liquidy, and add milk if too thick.

I just saw your smoothie post on foodgawker. Congratulations. Funny as I just submitted my blueberry smoothie there as well. I add protein powder, a bit of natural peanut butter and some ovaltine for added flavor and dimension. YUM! Yours looks delicious.
