Natalie's Killer Cuisine

So obviously by the title I didn’t make it to round two of the casting (you find out within 24 hours). Don’t worry, I’m not the type of person that likes to be down in the dumps for long.

I’m just kind of curious as to why, because the other person I knew at the casting was called back and I find her to be very similiar to other food network chefs. The whole angle I was trying to play is that young people have no one they can relate to on Food Network. If an 18 year or even young adult old turns on Food Network and wants to learn to fend for themselves in the kitchen, I doubt Paula Deen, Bobby Flay, or Ina Garten is going to catch their attention. I am young AND experienced and blah blah blah…

I guess Food Network is happy with their line up. When you think about they only have a few types of shows. Either you only have a short amount of time to cook or you need it easy and semi homemade, or cheap. Or you need to cook healthy. And all the other ones are hosted by middle aged chefs (not that there is anything wrong with being middle aged, I’m just sayin what 19 year old new to the kitchen wants to watch Daisy Martinez or Sandra Lee?).

Yes, I am being a Bratalie.

‘Food Network Made a Mistake’ Banana Bread

5 TBS Butter, softened
1/2 cup Sugar
1/4 cup Brown Sugar
1 cup smooshed Bananas, ripe
2 1/2 cup AP Flour
1 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp Instant Coffee
1 cup Pecans, optional

preheat oven to 350 degrees

1. Combine butter and both sugars in the bowl of an electric mixer. Cream until smooth and fluffy.
2. Smoosh your bananas into 1 cup (it took me 4 very ripe medium bananas) and add to mixer. This will make the mixture lumpy, which is what you want.
3. In another bowl combine all other ingredients except the pecans. Add to the mixer and mix until combined. Gently mix or fold in nuts.
4. Pour into a prepared (buttered & floured) 2 lb loaf pan. Bake for 50 minutes, rotating after 25 minutes.

This was a delicious banana loaf! I didn’t puree the bananas so on top actual pieces of banana had caramelized. I also think the teaspoon of instant coffee give it a little kick. The loaf wasn’t overly sweet so if you wanted you could add chocolate chips.

So go ahead and make this bread soon, and when you do say a little curse under your breath towards Food Network like I was today as I made this bread. Oh well… there is always next year!

P.S. Thanks everyone for all the sweet messages and kind words! Who needs a therapist? I feel so happy reading all these comments! Don’t worry, I am not giving up!

You will have another chance at a better time and then you will be glad, it didn't work, this time.

    From the optimist.

Well, that's a big fat bummer. But I suppose their loss is our gain. This banana bread looks delish.

Natalie, the bread looks amazing! I'm a firm believer in if a door is closed–it wasn't meant to be. I know it has to be hard but there are bigger and better things out there for you and maybe you can try again down the road. Good luck to you and keep cooking! :)

Fools. Don't they remember how Rachel Ray got started? I myself am middle aged and would much rather see an inventive young person in the kitchen engaging teens and college aged cooks than say Paula Dean not to mention several of the other old school and boring chefs the cling to. Maybe you should volunteer to cook on some of the local morning shows. You know, show up with some marvelous baked goodies and volunteer to do a segment for free.
But, keep blogging. I take inspiration even if I do have to take all the gluten and dairy out.

    The bread looks FANTASTIC…
Don't worry, you have all the time in the world to try again.
    Don't give up.

Aww, that's too bad! I would love to see such a thing on Food Network. I am but a humble novice when it comes to cooking – I know the basics but I'd like to see more ideas geared at me, a twentysomething just learning her way around the kitchen (and cooking/baking for one or two!). Alas, I suppose you're right, Food Network must assume that a college kiddie like myself just doesn't care. I guess I'll just stick to blogs like this one and try out this yummy looking recipe. Which is great because the bananas I picked up yesterday are already looking a bit mushy.

Um, I say screw Food Network. They are way behind the curve on food trends as far as I'm concerned. Still, it takes guts to go for it and you did. So celebrate that and in the meantime, keep proving them wrong. I think this bread is a great first step. (My boyfriend keeps buying bananas and not eating them…I feel like this bread may be the answer to that problem.)

That would be nice to get a show from a fresh point of view, some of the hosts on many cooking shows seem to be a stuck in a bit of a rut…and I am middle aged. I can get sucked into almost any cooking show, but many times I feel like they are all the same.

That bread looks delicious! Bananas never last long around here…even if I "over buy" we still end up running out before they get soft enough for bread. I am saving this recipe though!

FN made a BIG mistake. I think you should keep pushing onward… develop your presenatation style and maybe start with volunteering once in a while to demo in a local high school culinary class. You could determine what they like and don't like… what they want to learn about. You would also learn how to teach, which is important for anyone speaking (on TV or otherwise).
    We LOVE you!

We have done several TV segments in our local market and will soon be branching out.

The pics are beautiful, the recipe looks yummy, screw FN. Most the shows aren't worth watching anyway! Make a few videos and go to the local cable station.

You know, now that you mention it, I think you're absolutely on to something. In fact, they used to have what I would consider a younger chef…Dave something? Cooking meals on the cheap for his friends (he was in Philly, I believe). I'm not sure I ever see him anymore, so maybe they find that their target audience is older mom-types (hey, why are you looking at me?) who dig Ina Garten. Sorry it didn't work out, though. :( Your banana bread still sounds awesome!

    Best,
    Casey

    Cheers !

I totally agree with you on this one – FN needs some young blood! Even in my late 20's, I can't really get into a lot of their chefs. I want to see someone a little more like me and a little less like my mom or grandma in the kitchen! Keep your chin up – you're on to something great here!

  • Comment by stephchows — July 20, 2009 @ 10:27 am

BOOOO to food network!! I say we all write them and complain :) You rock anyway girl, don't let them get you down!

  • Comment by ... — July 20, 2009 @ 12:42 pm

Boo! Can we demand a recount?
Storm their kitchens wielding spatulas, colanders, and whisks?
I echo Lisa Curcio from above – being also (god help me) middle-aged! It would be nice to appreciate more of the FN chefs as much as the recipes!
You, Natalie, are appreciated, and you will overcome! : )
    Be well…

    Hi Natalie,

I loved this recipe and made some modifications and it came out great! I added some extra blueberries i had on hand and used walnuts because i didn't have pecans and placed them in a muffin tin and they make great muffins. Mine didn't come out as moist as I wanted so im not sure if i need to tweak the ingredients due to making as muffins, any suggestions?

    Thanks for the inspiration!

    Tara

  • Comment by Natalie — August 4, 2009 @ 8:20 pm

    Tara,

I'm glad they made great muffins, but sorry they weren't as moist as you wanted! This was more of a bread-ier banana nut loaf versus the cake-ier versions, that may have had something to do with it.

Next time for cupcakes I would add an extra 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup sugar and an extra 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. This will help them rise and hopefully help make them more moist.

    Thanks!
    Natalie

    Natalie,
The "younger" crowd really enjoys your blog. I work with a group of
3rd-5th grade students. All avid cooks and foodies. Over the past 3 weeks we have tried several of your recipes. All with great success. While the Food Network may not yet appreciate you, you do have a following that enjoys you. How young you are is also an inspiration to them. They have started a blog of their own.
