Natalie's Killer Cuisine

A few weeks ago I attended Tech Munch in Austin, remember when I wrote about it here? We talked about how important it is to know the bloggers in your community. The event was held in Austin where it seemed everyone knew each other. I was jealous. I wanted to know everyone! I only knew Natalie, who was from Dallas like me.

I realized that I had already met almost every Dallas food blogger at various events the past few months (though everyone had not met each other) so it seemed obvious that the answer would be to hold a food blogger potluck!  In my own kitchen! After many emails and tweets the day finally came to have everyone over to do what we do best, eat and talk about food.

I was so excited to have everyone coming over, though it was confirmed that the apartment complex I live in is a maze. After tracking everyone down in the complex (they were easy to find, camera bag in one hand, food in the other) we set up the food, we snapped some pictures, and we ate! Here is what everyone brought! As soon as everyone posts the recipes on their blog I will link back to it. Until then, drool over these photos.

Alta from Tasty Eats at Home brought a Beet and Orange Salad with Basil Vinaigrette. I usually avoid beets because I tend to ruin whatever I am wearing, but this has inspired me to cook with them more. It was fresh and I felt healthy while eating it. (Until I had cake.)

Emily from The City Sisters made Corn Fritters with Avocado Crema. I ate so many of these! I have always loved corn fritters. The crispy coating with the sweet crunchy corn. And the avocado crema was the perfect condiment.

I put together a simple fruit salad using raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and kiwi. Not pictured is the Toasted Coconut Dipping sauce, which I made using 1 cup Greek Yogurt, 1 cup Vanilla Yogurt, 1 tsp Coconut Extract and 1/2 cup Toasted Coconut.

Natalie from The City Sisters made a Mediterranean Lentil Salad which was delicious, and also my first time having lentils.

Kelly from Evil Shenanigans brought these crab cakes and they were delicious! And to top it off, they were baked. She brought a homemade tartar sauce to go with, and some fresh lemon.

Heather from Heather Bakes brought this yummy Tex Mex Pasta Salad!

Just look at my plate. This was before seconds.
and thirds.

The pork you see was made by Jose at Left-Field Lengua. It was delicious, juicy, and crispy at the same time.

Hi Emily and Heather, whats up?

Let’s talk dessert.

I made these Hummingbird cupcakes. The cake was filled with pineapple, banana, coconut and pecans with cream cheese frosting. I will post the recipe this week! They were great and I am glad I have a few left over.

They will be great for breakfast tomorrow.

And Kelly made this totally awesome cake.

6 layers of butter cake with alternating layers of  raspberry curd and chocolate ganache, covered in white chocolate frosting. Shes awesome.

I love her for bringing this cake. I love her even more for leaving me a nice chunk of it.

Yes, we are still talking about the cake.

This is Joy from Joylicious asking for a piece of cake, and that is Kelly saying sure, here is a slice of cake!

Look at these beautiful yellow roses that Joy brought! And Emily brought me the cutest handmade apron and Heather brought these great brown kitchen towels that will great for photos. I was not expecting gifts! I need to throw potlucks more often!!

And here we all are!

I had a great day and am glad I could bring everyone together to meet each other.

I look 4 feet tall, and am now returning that dress after seeing it in photo. That is all.

    Natalie–

I had a lot of fun at the potluck. I felt instantly at home when I arrived and I saw everyone with their cameras — I am usually the only dork running around and snapping pictures of people’s foods heh heh heh :) I would also like to apologize for my lack of contribution to the pot luck — my wings were an epic fail (how embarrassing!) but I PROMISE once my new house is done we must have a get together at my place and hopefully then I will make yall some dishes (that aren’t burnt).

Anyhoo, I had a great time I am sorry I had to leave early but it was really great to finally meet all the bloggers personally, I honestly have never had such great conversation with a group of “strangers”. I hope we have more get togethers over the summer, food + photography + fun = awesome time. Thanks again you were an AWESOME host :)!

It was so great of you to host this event! I had a lovely time, I went home totally stuffed, and I got to meet some really wonderful people. How awesome is that? Mark loved the cupcakes, BTW. :D The cream cheese frosting was so silky … nom! All the food was great, but I keep dreaming about corn fritters and pea salad! Also, thank you for all your kind words about the cake! You are very sweet, and I hope you liked your left-overs!

Natalie, thanks so much for hosting this! It was great! Your photos of all of our grub are wonderful, and I agree, Kelly’s cake was the most gorgeous thing. And that dress – don’t knock it, you looked cool and refreshing and spring-like! Loved it. And LOVED your pea salad.

Aw this looks like fun =) I can’t wait to meet nearby bloggers when I’m established somewhere (though I suppose 4 years of pharmacy school will indeed establish me in Columbus for a little while…)

Not that I’ve seen to many Cbus-dwellers on the sites I haunt.

Also, the dress is cute, I love white clothes! I’m under 5 feet so I can understand looking short in photos ;)

In the summertime — oh, about April through October — in Arizona, I can hardly keep a banana alive for more than 2 days out of the store — so I have lots and lots of blackened bananas in the freezer waiting for me to make banana bread. This recipe for cake intrigued me. Now comes the BUT or HOWEVER. I’m currently working on a new dietary plan for my best friend who has been diagnosed with crippling case of aceliac disease. It’s difficult, but I’m going to try this recipe using gluten=free flour. Since I have excluded salt in cooking for my diabetic mother who lives with me, I only use “regular” butter and that mostly from Ireland. It’s worth the extra cost. This sounds as though it would be good with fresh berries and a little whipped cream. I’ll report back.
