I was recently scanning through chocolate recipes (what else is new) when I glanced across something that said Biscuits with Chocolate Gravy. Wait… what? The thought of having chocolate in a way I have never had it before, as a gravy, was enough for me. I was sold! I decided to make this for breakfast the next day which was easy since I had all the ingredients on hand.

I know some of you may turn away from the idea of having chocolate for breakfast, but is pancake syrup any better for you? Nope. Or what about that white chocolate mocha from Starbucks every morning? Nope! So go ahead, pull out the cocoa powder and make breakfast.

Chocolate Gravy has a rich history and has been cooked for hundreds of years. Modern recipes from for chocolate gravy have evolved from the popular 19th century combinations of cocoa and pudding.

Chocolate gravy has mainly been cooked in the South, and after researching the scrumptious meal I realized many people have strong feelings about it. For many people, chocolate gravy makes them think about their Grandmother, their father, Sunday mornings. For me, I think about the best breakfast ever.

I have a confession. I used canned biscuits!
Oh the shame… I didn’t want to tell you, but there was no way around it. Don’t judge me.

But you know what, you can’t deny it and say Pillsbury biscuits, baked until golden perfection, are bad. You would be lying if you did! I do make homemade biscuits, just didn’t feel like it that morning. I opened the can of biscuits (actually I made Kyle do it, I hate how the package bursts open, it scares me) and I made the gravy in less than 15 minutes. Set the coffee on brew, and breakfast is served!

Chocolate Gravy
yield: 8 servings

1 cup Sugar
2 cups Milk
3 TBS AP Flour
1/4 cup Cocoa Powder
4 TBS Butter
1/4 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Salt

1. In a heavy saucepan turn heat to high and combine sugar and milk. Sift in flour and cocoa and whisk until smooth.
2. Whisk constantly with mixture on medium high heat. It will boil and thicken like gravy, around 5 – 10 minutes.
3. When sauce is thick turn the heat off and add butter, cinnamon and salt. Whisk until smooth and creamy. Serve immediately over biscuits. (The sauce would be great with pancakes and waffles also. )

This was such a delicious and delectable breakfast. Kyle was skeptical at first, but after one bite he was in love. He compared the taste to a chocolate donut, with the buttery dough and smooth, hardly sweet chocolate. Though chocolate gravy isn’t as common as it once was, it’s growing in popularity in my home. And hopefully yours soon!

My grandma used to make chocolate gravy and biscuiits for us all the time. Sometimes we would crumble saltine’s or Ritz crackers over our gravy. Mmm! Your photos are great!

There’s nothing wrong with canned biscuits! =) At first glance, these looked like cream puffs with chocolate drizzled on it. Looks fantastic and chocolate is good any time of the day!

Yum, yum, yum…I’ve lived in the south for 15 years now, and heard about chocolate gravy a few years ago. You are right, people around here have a real attachment to it!! I’ve tried it and loved it, and it’s so easy to make, too!! Can’t be worse for ya than sausage gravy, that’s for sure!!

What an interesting idea! Love it! I’d have to use canned biscuits. Mine usually come out hard as a rock. :)

You’re right – I’m from the South and my grandparents occasionally made biscuits with chocolate gravy when I was a kid – so this definitely brings back memories! Deliciousness, for sure!! I’ll have to try your recipe, it sounds fabulous.

There are people who think chocolate is bad for breakfast? Blasphemy!

This looks like a gravy you could use on several things.

Excellent justification for having chocolate for breakfast! Certainly no worse than having a big fatty fry up and/or coffee with multiple sugars! Just be sure you don’t spill any dollops of chocolate on your shirt to give yourself away ;)

I just love this! IT DOES remind me of my grandma Fern. We make our without the flour, salt, and cinnamon but looks just the same. Thank you for posting this- (we always use premade bisquits-don’t feel bad!)

My Grandma always made biscuits and chocolate gravy back in AR. She said her mother made it for her.

I married a man 16 y/o than me and even though I’ve lived in Nashville all my life, I thought he was crazy when he talked about these. He was quite upset that I didn’t know how to just whip these up, even though I had never heard of them. His mother was from southern KY. and she made these all the time when he was a child. By the time I met her she was in her late eighties & somewhat senile so no one ever thought to get the recipe. I couldn’t even picture the thought of biscuits with chocolate gravy! I did try to look for recipes with no luck so when I saw this you can imagine what I thought. I printed these to send to to my EX-husband for his new wife to make. HAH! They look so good, I think I’ll just “whip” me up a batch too!

my mom always made chocolate gravy. when i was grown, i asked her for her recipe, silly me!! she said you need a handful of this, and 1/2 a handful of that, and a pinch, and so much milk!!! so one day, i had her over to my home, while she was making the choc. gravy, she was pouring the dry ingredients into her hand to measure, then i would take those contents, and pour into a measuring cup. No one cooks better than our Southern Moms!!!!!!!!!!!!

My brother and I both had paper routes and on Sunday mornings we would race to finish our route. Once finished we would head to our grandmothers house for biscuits and chocolate gravy. She would make home made drop biscuits and the first one there always got the biggest biscuit and the most gravy.

My Mom made something like this but she made “Badder Bread” with the chocolate gravy. I had forgotten about it. Thanks so much for reminding me.
